History of Skydiving
Skydiving - the thought stirs different reactions in everyone. The beginner will probably have feelings that combine excitement and fright. Experienced jumpers will definitely show confidence and anticipation at the thought of the next skydive. While many have feared and enjoyed this extreme sport, the history of skydiving is still relatively unknown to most of us.
The history of skydiving dates back at least as far as circa 1797 when Andre-Jacques Garnerin of Paris France, invented the vented parachute. He made what is thought to be the first successful jump using this vented parachute. Parachutes have had many variations such as that of Leonardo da Vinci. The inspiration of Garnerin’s invention was probably taken from an umbrella-like device, eventually developing into what we are now familiar with.
The limp parachute, one of the forerunners of skydiving, was another variation of the parachute. This limp parachute was equipped with a horizontal bar instead of the usual basketlike mechanism. Tom Baldwin of the U.S. made possibly the first successful attempt using the limp parachute in 1897. Leslie Irvin, another brave American, launched himself into the history books when he used a hand-operated parachute in 1919.
The important history of skydiving involves both World War I and II. The military forces of both the opposing armies have utilized skydiving. The extreme sport became competitive about the 1930s when skydivers began to compete for awards. After 21 years skydiving became a world recognized sport. In 1990 the 20th World Parachuting Championships was held and is known as the first truly international parachuting competition.

Today skydiving is looked at as both a recreational activity and a sport. There are many variations of skydiving, including the awe inspiring skydive surfing. Gary Patnor is credited with being the first person to attempt such difficult air acrobatics. Skydive surfing begun in the mid 1960s. Gary Patnor is also known in the history of skydiving for another feat. The technology giant company Sony, hired Patnor in 1971 to make the first “air-to-air video jump”. He made a recording of the Transpo 1972 International Air Show the following year.
Some people consider skydiving a risky sport while others look at it as a recreational activity. Still others simply enjoy the heart pumping and adrenalin rush that is a crucial part of this sport. Many couples have performed daredevil acts in skydiving while other groups have earned their own recognition in the world of group skydiving. International skydiving competitions are regularly held that showcase the best skydivers. Skydiving suits and equipment have had to evolve to fit the changing needs of skydivers.
Skydiving started with an adventurous imagination and inquisitive mind. Those who were daring enough to attempt a form of human flight have become part of history.
